Basically, it's the emotions that we allow our readers to see, feel, taste, smell and hear that bring us closer to them. Like gut wrenching when there's a tragedy; elation when there's happiness; sorrow when we've done something we shouldn't have. Most of all, for this romance writer, there's the joy of finding a kindred soul that you want to spend the rest of your life with--that someone you can't live without.
